Though I have not ever been in a serious auto collision, I have been in one that may have been significant had things been just a little bit different. I consider myself lucky, and I hope this is nothing that I ever have to go through, and I hope no-one in my family has that sort of bad luck either. Nobody wants to go through an automobile crash; you need to know it is a possibility. I stress out about them the most in winter. We live in an area where everyone thinks they can handle the snow, and they go speeding through it as if they were invincible. They are frequently proven incorrect.

It appeared there was a rash of collisions when I was a teenager. It may have been that people did not have lots of money and bought predominantly used cars - and while used cars can be completely safe, purchasing used cars will never be utterly as trustworthy as buying new motor vehicles. I lived in a very small town, and our graduating classes averaged less than one hundred students every year. Everybody pretty much knew everyone else, and this wasn't just constrained to those in your class. It seemed that each year there was at least one deadly auto crash, and it was always fatal. The saddest part was that each auto collision seemed to be connected to drinking. There was not much else to do in our city, so everyone drank. A lot of people in my school died due to it.

I can't say I was much better. Though I didn't drive, I did ride around with people who had done so. I was not what you might call a dim-witted person either. Teenagers know the risks of an auto accident but they just don't think it can happen to them. I just not ever thought I was in danger, and I was lucky that the only automobile crash I was in was quite minor, and equally blessed in that nobody got hurt. Icy roads were to blame for that accident, and thankfully no-one had been drinking.

If you worry about your children being involved in an automobile crash, you have a right to worry. The smartest teens in the world make some poor choices. That's all a part of growing up. You have to warn them of the dangers of drinking and being in a vehicle, and you have to let them know that an auto collision can happen at any time. This might not be enough though, and that means you have to ensure you know where your kids are and what they are doing at all times. This might mean making them stay home when their friends are out. They might say they dislike you for it, but it's all part of being a good parent. Personally, I would prefer a mad kid to a dead child.
